Ways to Help Wednesday: Strides Walk 2017

This October, each Wednesday we will be posting and sending out information on ways you can help fight breast cancer as a volunteer. As an American Cancer Society volunteer you can honor a survivor or a loved one lost to cancer, help save lives of people in your local community, and around the world. It only takes a little time to do a lot of good. Discover how rewarding it is to be a volunteer.

Today’s post is about the Strides Walk itself. This is an event held every year around the country and world. We have had several strides walk in the past in Second Life. This year will be the third year we have done it as a walk-a-thon.

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks raise awareness and funds to save lives from breast cancer. Each event is a noncompetitive, 3 to 5 mile walk (in the real world) that brings people together to make a difference for everyone who has been touched by breast cancer. The events raise money to fund innovative research, provide free information and support, and to help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable.

In Second Life, our walk is very familiar though the distance of the walk may be a bit different and we treat it more like a walk-a-thon to help raise funds. This virtual walk is like no other Strides walk because this walk enables all people to participate no matter what their physical abilities are or their location. If you can use a computer you can make a difference and take part in this event.

List here below is the link you can use to sign up as a walker. Once you are signed up, you will receive a notecard about your next steps and items to help you as you work to get sponsors. This is a fun, easy way to help MSABC. We hope to see many of you on the track.

Here is the basics on how the walk works: Each person signs up and they seek sponsors that donate based on what how many laps the walker completes on the track. On the day of the walk each walker walks around the track as many times as they can from 10 am to 6 pm slt. They may start and stop anytime they wish in that time frame. At the end of the walk.. they go back to the sponsors and tell them how many laps they walk x (times) their donation per lap. The Donors drop their pledged donations in a kiosk the walker has out.

That’s it!! That simple. Walkers will be recognized for their fund raising the night of the Gala.

Don’t wait!! Click here to sign up!
