Do you know someone who has fought breast cancer? Have you ever wanted to do something about it? Do you believe that we should commit ourselves to creating a world where our children don’t have to go through the same experiences as we have?
The American Cancer Society gives us the best chance to make a meaningful difference in finding treatment options, early detection, and the prevention of breast cancer. You are invited to be a part of our community of breast cancer warriors in Second Life. October is commonly known as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month;” therefore, each October, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Across Second Life offers multiple opportunities for a wide variety of avatars to use their Second Life to make a real difference in the lives of people around the world.
In order to make the biggest impact, we are opening registration for our two month-long events, the Parade of Homes & the Out Shop Cancer shopping extravaganza! Event organizers urge builders, creators, and store-owners to sign up now if you want be a part of the grid’s most-successful, longest-running, and farthest-reaching effort to fight breast cancer in October.
Out Shop Cancer
Out Shop Cancer is a grid-wide shopping event that brings avatars to participating merchant stores. Merchants designate specific items that will be sold as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer programs and services.
Last year, more than 40 stores participated in this event. Our goal for 2019 is to have 50 designers and merchants involved in this breast cancer event. Sandie Slate is one of the Event Leads and plans to welcome a variety of designers to represent the diversity of avatars in Second Life. “Because breast cancer is the 2nd most diagnosed cancer, and because Second Life gives us the opportunity to explore so many different forms of expression, we are planning a shopping experience that will offer something to as many types of avatars as possible. This means that we need a cross-section of designers and creators to represent fashion, hair, accessories, skins/shapes, A/Os, recreation, art, and anything else that would interest men, women, children, and non-human avatars in Second Life.”
Essentially, if you create and sell anything in Second Life and you want to support the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer program, you should apply now to reserve your spot. For more information, check out the Out Shop Cancer Info page at makingstridessecondlife.org.
Parade of Homes
The Parade of Homes is a unique event that gives avatars the chance to explore a wide variety of homes and/or stores that sell products to turn your Second Life house into a home. The ‘parade’ is an open-house style event where avatars can teleport directly to each of the houses that are in the Parade of Homes showcase. All of the houses on the tour are for sale, where proceeds are donated to the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Across Second Life.
The 2019 event will be the second Parade of Homes in Second Life. In addition to houses, the event is open to all builders, creators, and designers in the Home and Living aspects of Second Life. One of the Event Leads, Leala Spire, is focused on connecting established and new builders with avatars who are interested in making a home for themselves in Second Life. “The Parade of Homes is a great platform for designers of homes and home-related products to get discovered by a wide audience while supporting the American Cancer Society. This means a lot because if you or someone you know has survived breast cancer, the American Cancer Society played a role in that.”
Builders, creators, designers, and merchants in the home industry of Second Life are encouraged to apply now to be involved in the 2019 Parade of Homes of Second Life. For more information, visit the Parade of Homes page of makingstridessecondlife.org.

A message from Stingray9798 Raymaker…
We all know that October is breast cancer awareness month, but did you know that American Cancer Society volunteers in Second Life work year-round to raise money and plan our pink-themed events that happen each fall? In 2018, our 5 campaigns combined to raise over $8,632 USD toward the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer mission.
We appreciate all of the support that our “pink” volunteers across Second Life have dedicated. The 2018 total is the second highest ever, for Making Strides, and represents a significant fundraising increase over 2017. This is another example of how important it is to work together for a shared goal, where we are all important members of the Second Life community, and we recognize the valuable contributions we can all make. Whether you are a photographer, a merchant, a home builder, or any other active member of Second Life, there is an opportunity for you to Make Strides Against Breast Cancer across Second Life.
Leala Spire & Sandie Slate have already begun planning for 2019. Anyone interested in participating in MSABC in SL should contact them. It’s never too early to get started!
If you are a current cancer patient or are a cancer survivor, having cancer any day of the year is never easy, but everything seems to get magnified during the holidays. If you need some tips on how to help you through the next few weeks, please visit http://bit.ly/2OWv8Od
For our caregivers the holidays also present their own set of joys and challenges. Caregivers get little time off and with the hustle & bustle of the holidays even the little things in life get stressful. If you are currently caregiving for someone this holiday season and need some tips to make things a bit easier, read this: http://bit.ly/2OZe2Q9
And then for all of us, but especially our caregivers who have given so much of themselves caring for their loved ones there is coping with the grief of lost loved ones during the holidays as we remember those we have lost. For some help coping with grief during the holidays, here are some references: http://bit.ly/2AbKnOa and http://bit.ly/2PK2xkD
For both cancer patients/ survivors and cancer caregivers, the American Cancer Society offers support in Second Life as well as in our first lives.
Inworld we have the ACS Cancer Survivors Network group for all cancer patients and survivors. And we have the ACS Cancer Caregivers Network group for all current and former caregivers. If you would like more information about either group or to join, please contact:
Sandie Slate (Sandie Loxingly)
There is also 24/7 support available from the American Cancer Society via phone at 1-800-227-2345 or by visiting cancer.org and clicking “live chat”. **
The most important thing to remember every day – and especially during the holidays – that none of us living with cancer in our daily lives is alone.
**For non- US patients/ survivors and caregivers, you are welcome to contact the American Cancer Society via web chat at cancer.org and they will be happy to try to direct you to resources available for you in your home country.
As you go through cancer treatments, many find themselves dealing with additional emotional issues aside from the physical side effects of treatment. These emotional issues can also arise after treatments are finished.
For women dealing with breast cancer, these issues are sometimes amplified even more from the changes to their bodies as a result of treatments.
Finding a good support system to help you through this period on your journey is key to helping navigate these times.
For those breast cancer patients and survivors in Second Life, there is the ACS Cancer Survivors Network inworld. This is a peer to peer support group, connecting people who have fought cancer who will provide support, advice, and encouragement to cancer patients in Second Life who are undergoing treatment and other survivors.
For all breast cancer patients and survivors there is also the Reach To Recovery program available through the American Cancer Society.
The most important thing to keep in mind is you are never alone.
