Navigating Through the Wilderness – Coping During the Holidays

As the holiday season gets into full swing we need to remember that cancer patients/ survivors and cancer caregivers need extra patience and care during this time of year.

If you are a current cancer patient or are a cancer survivor, having cancer any day of the year is never easy, but everything seems to get magnified during the holidays. If you need some tips on how to help you through the next few weeks, please visit http://bit.ly/2OWv8Od

For our caregivers the holidays also present their own set of joys and challenges. Caregivers get little time off and with the hustle & bustle of the holidays even the little things in life get stressful. If you are currently caregiving for someone this holiday season and need some tips to make things a bit easier, read this: http://bit.ly/2OZe2Q9

And then for all of us, but especially our caregivers who have given so much of themselves caring for their loved ones there is coping with the grief of lost loved ones during the holidays as we remember those we have lost. For some help coping with grief during the holidays, here are some references: http://bit.ly/2AbKnOa and http://bit.ly/2PK2xkD

For both cancer patients/ survivors and cancer caregivers, the American Cancer Society offers support in Second Life as well as in our first lives.

Inworld we have the ACS Cancer Survivors Network group for all cancer patients and survivors. And we have the ACS Cancer Caregivers Network group for all current and former caregivers. If you would like more information about either group or to join, please contact:
Sandie Slate (Sandie Loxingly)

There is also 24/7 support available from the American Cancer Society via phone at 1-800-227-2345 or by visiting cancer.org and clicking “live chat”. **

The most important thing to remember every day – and especially during the holidays – that none of us living with cancer in our daily lives is alone.

**For non- US patients/ survivors and caregivers, you are welcome to contact the American Cancer Society via web chat at cancer.org and they will be happy to try to direct you to resources available for you in your home country.

Don’t miss the Parade of Homes

From sleek modern to cozy, there’s something for every home taste in the Parade of Homes.

Be sure to stop by the houses on the Parade, which goes through Wednesday.. Be sure to bring your Lindens because the houses are for sale and many of the stops also have furniture and more that goes with the homes, all benefiting MSABC Across Second Life.

Here’s a brief rundown of what you’ll see on the tour:

PARADE OF HOMES (1)Wood paneling warms the sleek modern Miami Loft from Harrys Houses. The skybox features plenty of room while still maintaining an open feel.

PARADE OF HOMES (7)Take a trip to the Middle East with the White Villa from Studio Craft Architect. With its clean lines and exotic flair, the Villa transports you to a 1,000 Arabian nights!

PARADE OF HOMES (6)The sprawling home from Pierce Designs Studios is an experience that is not to be missed. The multi-level home with a river running through it brings nature indoors. Explore the hillside home and see what wildlife you can spot.

PARADE OF HOMES (5)Feel the fog rolling in off the water in the mAI Sweet Home in its Lighthouse. With Old World charm, the lighthouse would be a graceful addition to your home.

PARADE OF HOMES (3)Plan to spend some time visiting the Love Everlasting homes. There’s two of them, each with a separate look and feel. See the indoor waterfall at the modern-style chalet or take in the coziness of the stone cottage. Both are available fully furnished and the decor is also separately available, all proceeds going toward MSABC!

PARADE OF HOMES (2)Rowanessque;s cozy cabin has cleaned lines and is perfect for those who wish to have a smaller home.

house_003The final stop on the Parade is AXL-pro’s house, which is a one-of-a-kind sprawling mansion with its own club and more than enough space for entertaining. There’s a second, smaller home available in a MSABC vendor: https://makingstridessecondlife.org/2018/10/25/bonus-home-to-buy-from-axl-pro/

If you have any questions about the Parade of Homes or MSABC please contact Leala Spire or Sandie Loxingly.

Ways to Help Wednesday

dsv-669x272

Get Involved

During this month we have talked about several ways you can help and make a difference.

Ways to Help Wednesday 10/3

Ways to Help Wednesday 10/10

Ways to Help Wednesday 10/17

Today let’s talk about what you can do IN WORLD!!  Sure making a donation is wonderful and every linden counts.  Sponsoring an Event or Walker is also a great way to help as well.  Let’s take a few and focus on ways in-world to… VOLUNTEER!

Just like most things in life one of the best gifts you can give is Yourself.  Give your time and skills.  Don’t get me wrong your online donations or lindens in a kiosk are GREAT! We appreciate every single linden and thank you all.   Just think for a moment though, did you know in donating your time to plan an event, hosting, djing, or using skills you may have in writing, taking part in social media, blogging, creating items, or even using photoshop, can more than double or triple a donation?  You giving of yourself by being part of the MSABC Volunteer group and sharing information and events with friends can help as well. Volunteering for the Strides Committee can produce thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of linden donations in kiosks all over Second Life.

Our theme for the Strides Walks in SL is “Everyone leaves footprints, make yours count”.  The same is true with your second life.  We all come in to relax and have fun.  We make great friends.  Wouldn’t you like to know that even in your “downtime”, relaxing, and play around that you made it count?

When you participate in a Making Strides in Real Life or Second Life, you’re helping to fund breast cancer research and give patients the things they need now: free rides to chemo, free places to stay near treatment, and a live 24/7 cancer helpline for answers and support.  You may never know the names or see the faces of the ones you have helped but if you talk to Survivors and Caregivers in Second Life who have used these wonderful programs, you will get a sense of the difference you help make.

In the next couple weeks, the Strides leaders will be asking for volunteers for next year.  Please consider responding to that search for individuals and help make next year’s Strides bigger and better than ever.

Mission Monday: Emotions & Breast Cancer

As you go through cancer treatments, many find themselves dealing with additional emotional issues aside from the physical side effects of treatment. These emotional issues can also arise after treatments are finished.

For women dealing with breast cancer, these issues are sometimes amplified even more from the changes to their bodies as a result of treatments.

Finding a good support system to help you through this period on your journey is key to helping navigate these times.

For those breast cancer patients and survivors in Second Life, there is the ACS Cancer Survivors Network inworld. This is a peer to peer support group, connecting people who have fought cancer who will provide support, advice, and encouragement to cancer patients in Second Life who are undergoing treatment and other survivors.

For all breast cancer patients and survivors there is also the Reach To Recovery program available through the American Cancer Society.

The most important thing to keep in mind is you are never alone.
